You can download a trial version of the software at PalmGear. Just click on the 'Zip' icon and follow the instructions to download a trial version of TopSecret. The trial version will allow you to evaluate it for 7 days.

You can then purchase a license to the software at the same location. Just click on the 'Buy' icon and continue to checkout. You will receive an e-mail with a registration code that converts the trial version to a fully-licensed version. Enter the unlock code into TopSecret as instructed in the registration code e-mail to change the evaluation software to fully-licensed software.

Q. What is the difference between TopSecret and TopSecret Freeware?

TopSecret Freeware is a freeware product. There is no charge for its use. It includes just the TopSecret application for any Palm OS device.

The latest version of TopSecret Freeware can be obtained at TopSecret Freeware. Just extract the TopSecret.prc file and install it to your handheld device using the Palm Desktop Install Tool.

TopSecret (version 2.0 or later) is a shareware product and requires a license fee for continued use beyond the trial period. The shareware version includes a handheld version of TopSecret, plus a Windows Desktop application with HotSync synchronizing conduit. The handheld version of TopSecret included with TopSecret shareware includes additional software features over what is included in TopSecret Freeware.

The latest version of TopSecret shareware can be obtained at our Download page.

Q. Is TopSecret compatible with Windows Vista?

Yes, TopSecret version 3.9a, and later, is compatible with Windows Vista.

Q. How do I transfer TopSecret to a new PC?

To migrate to the new computer, perform the following:

  1. Synchronize your Palm device with your old computer to make sure all TopSecret data is up-to-date.
  2. Install Palm Desktop on the new PC.
  3. Download the latest version of TopSecret from here
  4. Install TopSecret on the new PC.
  5. On the new PC, click on the HotSync icon in the Windows Tool Tray (lower-right of screen).
  6. Select "Custom..."
  7. In the list of conduits that appears, double-click on "TopSecret".
  8. Double-click on "Handheld overwrites desktop".
  9. Close all remaining dialogs by selecting "OK" or "Done".
  10. Place your Palm device in the cradle and perform a HotSync synchronization. This will transfer all TopSecret data from your Palm device to the new PC.
  11. Start TopSecret on the new PC and enter your TopSecret registration code.

Q. Is the data entered into TopSecret backed up?

If you have TopSecret Desktop version 2.0 or later, your data is safely backed up by the synchronizing HotSync conduit.

If you are using TopSecret Freeware, the backup strategy is dependent upon the version of the TopSecret software.

If you are using TopSecret Freeware version 3.2 or later, your TopSecret data will be backed up by the standard backup performed by the Palm Desktop HotSync software.

If you have version 1.5, you will find a checkbox setting called 'Backup TopSecret data' in the TopSecret preferences panel. Ensure that this checkbox is set to ensure that your data is backed up with each HotSync action.

If you are using a version of TopSecret Freeware prior to version 1.5, WE ENCOURAGE YOU TO UPGRADE TO THE LATEST VERSION. Versions prior to 1.5 did not reliably backup the data.

In all cases, if your data is backed up by HotSync, it will be placed in a file called 'TopSecretDB.PDB' located in the 'Backup' folder of your Palm user folder (normally located at 'C:\Palm\<your_user_name>\Backup').

We encourage all users of TopSecret Freeware for the handheld with no desktop software or synchronizing conduit to ensure that the TopSecret application ('TopSecret.PRC') and the TopSecret data ('TopSecret.PDB') are present in their backup folder. If your data is backed up by HotSync, it will be placed in a file called 'TopSecretDB.PDB' located in the 'Backup' folder of your Palm user folder (normally located at 'C:\Palm\<your_user_name>\Backup'). If your TopSecret application is backed up by HotSync, it will be placed in a file called 'TopSecret.PRC' located in the 'Backup' folder of your Palm user folder (normally located at 'C:\Palm\<your_user_name>\Backup').

Q. If I am currently using TopSecret Freeware, will I lose data by upgrading to TopSecret 2.0 or later (shareware)?

You will not lose any data when upgrading from TopSecret Freeware to TopSecret (shareware). The TopSecret data is stored in a database, separate from the application on the handheld. When you install the new version of TopSecret, it will read the data from the database left by the old version of TopSecret.

When installing the new version, there is no need to un-install anything on the handheld before installing the new version. If you do un-install the old version of TopSecret prior to installing the new version, you will lose the data you previously entered since the delete operation on the Palm OS device will delete the application and any associated data.

Also, if you decide not to purchase a license to TopSecret shareware after evaluation, you can re-install TopSecret Freeware without loss of data. There is no penalty for evaluating TopSecret shareware with the Windows desktop and synchronizing conduit.

If you have difficulties, please contact us.

Q. What is the difference between Private records and Encrypted records on a Palm OS(r) device?

This is a very good question. The 'Private' password protected data entries in Palm OS(r) are just hidden from view on the handheld device unless a password is entered. The data is not encrypted in any way. Therefore, if you enter confidential information (like a credit card number) in a MemoPad entry, it is stored internally in a readable format. Worse yet, the data is stored on the desktop in a readable format. To see this, enter a credit card number in the MemoPad and mark it 'Private'. Perform a HotSync. Then, open the MemoPad data file in NotePad on the PC. You will see that your credit card number is clearly visible.

Note: The MemoPad data file is called 'memopad.dat' and is usually located at 'C:\Palm\<your_user_name>\memopad\memopad.dat'.

In summary, if you lose your Palm device, or it is stolen, all someone has to do is HotSync(r) your device, and view the data with a text editor like NotePad.

TopSecret stores all data in encrypted form. Therefore, even if someone finds your Palm device or gets access to your PC, the data is encrypted and can't be read, even with a text editor. Try looking at the TopScrt.dat file that contains the data for TopSecret.

Q. What should happen after a hard-reset?

The TopSecret application and any data entered on the handheld is set to be backed up automatically by the HotSync software (see previous question). After a hard-reset, the HotSync software should restore the TopSecret application and any TopSecret data to the handheld.

If you have TopSecret shareware, your data is safely backed up and restored by the synchronizing conduit after HotSync has restored the TopSecret application to the handheld.

Q. What should I do if the TopSecret desktop application is 'LICENSED' and the handheld application still says it is evaluation software or the evaluation period has 'EXPIRED'?

This can sometimes occur when changing to a new handheld device. The latest version of TopSecret should fix this problem. Please ensure that you have installed the latest version. If in doubt, please download the latest version and re-install.

If re-installation does not fix the problem, please try the following:

  1. Open TopSecret on the PC.
  2. Click on the 'Category' combo-box and select 'Edit Categories...'.
  3. Create a new category (anything will do).
  4. Perform a HotSync.

This should result in the license being transferred properly.

If you still have difficulties, please contact us.
